Doune Castle and the World of Outlander
Many visitors ask if there is a connection between Doune Castle and the Craig na Dun Stones, since the words "Doune" and "Dun" sound so similar. There is a connection between the two, but it centers around plot development rather than geography.
Doune Castle (Castle Leoch) is the first place Claire visits after traveling through time by touching the central stone at Craig na Dun. However, we must explain that the fictional area in Outlander called Craig na Dun was inspired by the real-life Callanish Standing Stones on the Isle of Harris and Lewis. This 5,000 year-old site consists of 13 large standing stones, surrounding a taller central monolith. These Neolithic stones were the inspiration for Outlander's creative idea of time travel through the stones, which was the catalyst for Claire's journey back in time to 1742 - the premise for the entire series.
While the Craig na Dun Stones themselves were created for the series rather than filmed at a real prehistoric stone circle, many guests choose to combine a visit to Doune Castle with a journey to the Isle of Lewis and Harris to see these mysterious stones up close and personally!
